PlanetScale adds two Prometheus metrics for container restarts

PlanetScale’s September 28, 2026 update adds two Prometheus metrics for container restarts and deprecates planetscale_pods_container_restarts_total. The old counter could produce inaccurate rates because its restart-reason label reflected only the latest container termination, while role or reason changes could split a series; it also missed the first restart.

The new counter, planetscale_pods_container_status_restarts_total, starts at 0 when a pod is created and has no reason or role label. A separate gauge, planetscale_pods_container_last_terminated_reason, reports why a container was last terminated. Users can combine the metrics over time to group restarts by reason, although the gauge reports only the latest termination reason. The new counter creates a series for every container, including those with no restarts, and queries reaching back before a series appeared can show a one-off spike. The old metric remains available until removal, and PlanetScale says it will announce a removal date beforehand.
