OpenAI is teasing 20-plus launches for DevDay as Altman says it has "found a new thing"

OpenAI holds its DevDay conference on Tuesday, and Sam Altman has been teasing it hard. "Pretty excited for DevDay tomorrow. We have found a new thing," he wrote on X on Monday. The post does not say what the new thing is. OpenAI's developer account said the keynote will be livestreamed and that it had "saved you a seat".

Posts sharing an OpenAI teaser say it promises "1 day. 20+ launches". That wording could not be checked against the teaser video itself, and OpenAI has not said what the launches are.

The volume is unusual by Altman's own account. On Sept. 22 he wrote that getting ready for this DevDay is "the first time I remember ever, in OpenAI history, saying 'this is too much stuff to launch'".

OpenAI developer Thibault Sottiaux ties the crunch to GPT-6 Astra. Since the team started using Astra internally, productivity jumped so much that some plans were moved up by six months, according to The Decoder's account of his post. On Sept. 23 Sottiaux wrote that DevDay has "many many things that should change the way you work" and called it "our most ambitious sprint".

OpenAI's developer changelog shows a busy September before the event: GPT-6 Astra on Sept. 3, the image models GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst and Flare on Sept. 8, the Agents API in public beta and the GPT-Live 1 voice model on Sept. 10, and GPT-6 Sol and Luna on Sept. 22.

The push follows Altman's public backing for Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei's call to slow frontier development. "I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier," Altman wrote on Sept. 12, adding that the topic had been discussed at OpenAI "in recent weeks".
