Docs users can edit and collaborate on Markdown files without converting them, while Drive displays formatted previews.

Google is adding native Markdown file support to Docs and formatted previews in Drive, according to an update dated October 5, 2026. The change covers files ending in .md or .markdown: Docs can open, edit and support collaboration on them, while Drive displays rendered versions. The files remain Markdown rather than being converted into Google Docs format.

Markdown is a text format widely used with large language models to retain structure such as tables, headings and bulleted lists without the size of heavier document formats. Google says the previous Docs workflow required importing and converting a Markdown file. That process could change formatting, remove comments and break a file into pieces. Native support addresses those conversion drawbacks by keeping the file type unchanged.

The change also brings Docs’ collaborative features to Markdown files. Google says people and agents can work together without needing to enter Markdown syntax by hand or manually convert files. They can also use Docs’ real-time editing and commenting tools while working on Markdown content. For AI builders, this means an agent and a person can collaborate in Docs on a Markdown file without requiring raw syntax or a format conversion.

Drive’s addition is for viewing: it renders Markdown as a formatted preview. Google says those previews can show clickable links and structured tables within Drive. This gives users a way to inspect the rendered document there, while Docs is the surface Google identifies for opening and changing the file. The announcement describes Drive previews separately from Docs’ opening, editing and collaboration features.

Google says there is no administrator control or end-user setting to turn on the feature. The rollout is gradual across Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, with visibility taking up to 15 days from October 5, 2026. The feature is available to all Google Workspace customers and people using personal Google accounts.
