GitHub previews external custom properties for repository context

GitHub has opened external custom properties in public preview, letting teams bring repository context into GitHub from systems such as configuration databases, developer portals or internal tools. The data can cover ownership, service tier, lifecycle stage and compliance status, with the external system responsible for keeping it updated.

Unlike properties maintained in GitHub, these values are read-only in its interface and can be synchronized through external custom properties APIs. Each integration can keep its fields in a separate namespace under its own prefix. The synced information can be used in repository views, filtering and ruleset targeting, allowing existing governance workflows to use it. Port.io is the first partner integration, and any enterprise can build its own connection with the APIs and fine-grained permissions.
