Fireflies adds free, unlimited voice dictation to its desktop app

Fireflies has introduced Talk, a voice-dictation feature in its desktop app that places text at the cursor in apps on Mac and Windows. Users click where they want to write, hold a keyboard shortcut while speaking, then release to insert the text without opening a separate composing window. On Mac, the shortcut is Fn; on Windows, users hold Ctrl and Win. The company says Talk is included with every Fireflies plan, including the free one, and has no limit on dictation.

Talk is designed to clean up speech as it is entered, removing filler words and false starts while preserving the speaker’s meaning, according to Fireflies. The company says it does not add words that the user did not say. Output formatting is adapted to the destination: an email is formatted as an email, while a Slack reply is formatted as a Slack reply. Fireflies also says that speaking a person’s name in Slack can turn it into an @mention, and that Talk supports more than 90 languages.

Fireflies says it made the feature free because it sees dictation as part of its existing product, rather than a separate service with an additional charge. The company says standalone dictation tools commonly charge $12 to $15 per month for unlimited use. Fireflies describes its product as having grown from a meeting notetaker into an AI assistant used by more than 20 million people, with features including meeting notes, email and report drafts, and CRM updates. Talk extends those workflows to composing text in other apps, including email, documents, chat, and AI prompts.

On data handling, Fireflies says dictations are saved on the user’s device, that it does not keep a copy, and that neither its staff nor people in the user’s workspace can view them. The company also says dictations are not used to train models and that Fireflies is SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliant. Fireflies contrasts typing at about 45 words per minute with speaking at about 150 words per minute. For AI builders, Talk offers a way to enter text by voice directly in existing apps, alongside the company’s stated device-storage policy.
