OpenAI launches Astra for Law, a GPT-6 configuration with its own legal index

The company said the index reaches more than 230 million web addresses and covers nearly all published U.S. precedential case law, along with statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions, with new material added daily. In OpenAI's own testing, the configured model answered 54.0 percent of 200 legal research questions correctly, against 38.7 percent for the standard model relying on web search. Those figures are vendor claims and have not been independently tested.

Access is initially limited. Firms including Cooley, Latham & Watkins, Ropes & Gray, Sullivan & Cromwell and Wachtell Lipton took part in early development, and the model appears in the ChatGPT and Codex model picker for approved users. OpenAI said an API version will follow, without giving a date or pricing; the legal software companies Harvey and Legora were named as customers for it. The package also includes data handling controls, partner plugins, and availability of ChatGPT inside Microsoft Word.
