Mozilla picks Mistral models for Firefox's Smart Window AI assistant
Mistral and Mozilla announced a partnership on Sept. 16 under which Mistral models will help run Smart Window, the AI assistant Firefox is testing in beta. Mozilla said Mistral Small 4 is being added for users in the U.S. and Canada, while France gains beta access with French-language support.
Smart Window builds an assistant into the browser. The companies say it can help untangle multi-step searches, find pages a user visited earlier and draw answers from open tabs. Mozilla said Mistral's model is one option among several and that users in every Smart Window market can still choose other AI models.
On privacy, Mistral's announcement said conversations are not stored on Mozilla's servers by default and that model partners, Mistral included, agree to zero data retention. The companies also said they are tuning models for regional languages and dialects, and Mozilla called France the first new Smart Window market with official local-language support. Mistral said the United Kingdom and Germany are expected to follow later this year; Mozilla's post referred more generally to further European expansion in 2026.
Neither company disclosed financial terms. Mozilla chief executive Anthony Enzor-DeMeo and Mistral chief executive Arthur Mensch presented the deal as a way to widen AI competition and user choice in browsers.
