King Charles urges AI leaders to keep the technology under human control
King Charles told executives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic at a private summit in Scotland on Sept. 17 that sufficient controls on AI are needed before it is too late. No agreements or commitments were announced.
The gathering took place at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, the estate that houses the King's Foundation. TechCrunch named Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, OpenAI chief financial officer Sarah Friar, Anthropic global affairs lead Tino Cuéllar, UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan, the head of Britain's foreign intelligence service and Paolo Benanti, who advises the Vatican on AI, among those present. Al Jazeera said co-founders of Nvidia and Google DeepMind attended alongside representatives of OpenAI and Anthropic.
In opening remarks, the King described the pace of AI development as both intriguing and deeply concerning. He warned of existential dangers if the technology fell into the wrong hands and asked that it remain in the service of humanity, community and the natural world. TechCrunch reported that he left after about 20 minutes.
No statement followed, and Al Jazeera noted that binding agreements had not been expected. Anthropic said it was honored to take part. The meeting came days after the company's chief executive called for slower frontier development, a position President Donald Trump has dismissed as a hoax.
