Anthropic reported to pick Nasdaq for IPO as Altman rules out 2026 OpenAI listing

Anthropic has chosen Nasdaq for its planned initial public offering, Business Insider reported on September 13, citing a person familiar with the company's plans; Reuters relayed the report. A day earlier, Fortune published an interview in which OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said his company will not go public in 2026.

Anthropic has not publicly named an exchange. Quartz, summarizing the Business Insider report, said the company is currently aiming for an October debut and that estimates putting its valuation near $2 trillion have circulated but are not final. Those details come from an unnamed source rather than the company. Anthropic said on June 1 that it had confidentially submitted a draft S-1 registration statement to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, with the number of shares and the price still undetermined and any offering dependent on market conditions.

Altman told Fortune that going public now would be unwise given current concerns about AI safety. He did not commit to 2027 either, saying OpenAI still has a lot to do. Reuters reported that he also suggested leading AI developers may be close to announcing an agreement to slow development and cooperate on safety risks. Fortune noted that a New York Times report in June had said OpenAI was weighing a delay of its offering from 2026 to 2027. Quartz said the Anthropic listing would be a second major win for Nasdaq over the New York Stock Exchange after SpaceX.
