Dario Amodei Proposes Pacing the AI Frontier
In a September essay, Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei proposed pacing frontier AI capability advances and embedding independent evaluators at frontier labs. He describes Anthropic’s evaluator commitment as the first step in a wider proposal for industry and government coordination.
Dario Amodei’s essay argues that frontier AI capability development should proceed at a pace that lets safety work keep up. Its first proposed step is embedded third-party evaluators with ongoing, employee-like access to examine safety practices, incidents, and relevant training processes. The essay says Anthropic is committing to that step. It then proposes coordination among frontier companies in democratic countries on common safety standards and limits on unchecked progress, followed by international coordination where verification is possible.
