OpenAI, Anthropic and Google in safety talks; standards body under discussion

An OpenAI spokesperson told CNBC the company has been talking with Anthropic and Google about working together on safety, after CNN reported that the three had discussed creating an industry standards body to test advanced models before deployment.

CNN, citing people familiar with the situation, reported on September 14 that representatives of the three companies had been meeting on a working-group basis since at least July, after Google DeepMind chair Demis Hassabis proposed a US-led standards body modeled on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority: a public-private arrangement overseen by government, funded by industry and staffed by independent technical experts. CNN said the three companies declined to comment or did not respond.

OpenAI global policy chief Chris Lehane said in Washington that the engagement had been under way for several weeks and that the companies did not believe an antitrust waiver was needed to coordinate on safety, Bloomberg Law reported. In a separate policy post, OpenAI said it would work with other frontier labs on voluntary standards with or without government support. No body has been formally established, and CNBC said Anthropic and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
